NFL Rookie Contracts
Something is wrong with the NFL. No, its not the recent studies showing serious brain injuries, or even the labor negotiations. Its the outrageous contracts that rookie players are signing before even playing a down in the NFL. Sam Bradford just signed a $78 million, $50 million guaranteed contract for the Rams as the top overall pick. This is a player just coming off arm surgery and is making more than established Qb's like Aaron Rodgers, Tony Romo, and Matt Ryan. Players who should make that much money are QB's like Brees, Brady, and Peyton Manning, all who will get a raise and new contract this year. Darrelle Revis has been holding out for big time money. I applaud him. He has shown he is the best CB in the game and has shut down any WR that has come his way. There is no way no other CB should be making more money than him, especially a rookie cornerback. Even if these rookies are impact players immediately, there should still be a system in which every year the pick number(ex. pick number 8) gets the same contract and amount every year, and if after 2 years they prove they are worth more money, the contract should be re-constructed. Veterans who have been in the league for years and are bruised and have multiply surgeries are probably not happy that some rookie is making more than them and they even haven't been through training camp! Roger Goodell should have this up there as a top priority to fix this.

I just have one question. How the hell can you applaud a player to hold out who is making $1 million a year? Millions of Americans would do anything to mkae that type of money, and because Darelle Revis feels he is worth more, he gets to just skip work. If Darelle Revis was a good person at all he would go to camp and try to work on a contract in the meantime, not just be stubborn and hold out. Now i agree with the fact that he deserves more money than he is making, but he doesn't have teh right to just skip his job and cry. He has a job that so many people want and he just decides hes not gonna play if he doesn't get more money. Thats ridicuous and I don't know how you can applaud a selfish and self-centered player like Revis even though he is one of the best players in the game.
ReplyDeleteEthics wise, you are completely correct. Millions of hard working Americans can barely bring home an income after taxes, and then you have an athlete who is worth "millions" because his ability to play a certain sport. That does not seem fair at all, especially with players pouting over raises all the time. But as far as NFL contract negotiations go, Revis is doing the right thing. He is shown he is the best CB in the league and can be the most effective player on the football field. He deserves top dollar for being the best defensive player in the league. The reason he is holding out isn't just money, but if he were to practice and some how injure himself during contract negotiations, that would severely effect his contract.
ReplyDeleteOkay, when you put it that way I 100% agree.
